Nebraska's Historic Landscapes
Jim Locklear
The way we landscape our homes and our public places says something about who we are both individually and as a society. An exploration of Nebraska's historic landscapes reveals how the connection between people and plants has played a vital role in the heritage and culture of Nebraska.
"Nebraska's Historic Landscapes" provides an overview of five historic landscapes in Nebraska. Each segment features video footage of the site and an interview with a person familiar with its history. The following historic landscapes are featured:
- The Nebraska State Capitol in Lincoln, where the landscape is intended to enhance the magnificent architecture of the building.
- The Joslyn Castle in Omaha, a once-lavish, turn-of-the-century estate garden undergoing restoration.
- The Nebraska National Forest near Halsey, the largest hand-planted forest in the western hemisphere.
- Harmon Park in Kearney, a Depression-era park restored to its former glory.
- The Sandoz ranch and orchard, setting for Mari Sandoz' famous novel, Old Jules.

Landscaping Nebraska Style
Jim Locklear
Gardeners, horticulturists and landscape designers in Nebraska are developing a new approach to landscaping that is both environmentally sound and that celebrates the natural beauty of our state.
"Landscaping Nebraska Style" beings by looking to our natural plant communities for patterns, ideas and inspiration that can be reflected in cultivated landscapes. The goal is to create landscapes that require less resources and that capture a Nebraska "sense of place."
The video explores this exciting approach to landscaping by taking a close look at four different natural plant communities, along with a corresponding garden or cultivated landscape that reflects each community. Featured in the video are:
- Shortgrass prairie and ponderosa pine forest in the Wildcat Hills near Scottsbluff, and the landscape of the Wildcat Hills Nature Center.
- Eastern deciduous woodland at Indian Cave State Park, and the grounds of Arbor Lodge in Nebraska City, former estate of Arbor Day founder J. Sterling Morton.
- Mixed prairie near Red Cloud, the home of celebrated Nebraska author Willa Cather, and the Cather Garden on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus.
- Tallgrass prairie near Lincoln, and the grounds of the Nebraska State Fair Park Arboretum.
The video concludes in the scenic Niobrara River valley in north-central Nebraska where these communities mingle in a unique and beautiful way.
